Our Story

It started with
a phone call
in 1986.

A vintage rotary telephone

I have always loved live music.

A friend from high school called and asked if I wanted to take her boyfriend's spot as a runner for concerts in Little Rock. The venue: Barton Coliseum. Ten thousand seats, in a part of town you did not want your car to break down in. What's a runner you ask? Think Red from Shawshank Redemption. I was just supposed to get stuff.

I said yes before she finished asking.

A snapshot taken backstage at a concert in the coliseum years

For the next five years I was there for every show that rolled through. I was in awe of the sheer size of the operation, the coordination, the precision it took to build a whole world out of a parking lot and have it gone by sunrise.

But the real education wasn't in the trucks. It was in the people. The artists didn't have to think about their gear getting stolen or a flat tire eating the per diem — that was on me and the crew. They just had to walk out and be larger than life for two hours. We made sure “larger than life” didn't fall apart backstage. Along the way I met every kind of weirdo, oddball, genius, and burnout the music business produces, and got a real feel for how that art actually gets to an audience. I did and saw some weird stuff over those five years. I got to experience, albeit for a short time, what that life is like.

The 10,000 people out front had no clue.

I'd been in a corporate job since college, and none of it ever stuck the way music did. So I decided to start promoting music on the side — small shows, in my little town in South Carolina. Coffee shops, mid-sized rooms, anywhere a band could plug in. I think, subliminally, I just wanted a little of that '80s feeling back. I wanted to be around musicians.

As I booked more independent artists, my wife and I would put them up at the house, make sure they got a decent meal, and over dinner they'd tell us what life on the road actually looked like. While the scope was much smaller than my coliseum days, it was essentially the same: there's a lot of work that goes into that show you love.

We heard it over and over — sleeping in the van in some sketchy lot, or sometimes sleeping in the gear trailer itself, because somebody had to make sure nothing walked off overnight. These were touring artists, the ones putting on the show you paid to see, coming home broke and worn down, and nobody in the crowd had any idea.

That's the disconnect that never left me. The audience thinks the life on the stage is the life the artist is living. It isn't. Fans get the show. Artists eat the cost of getting there. Every time we fed someone or gave up the guest room, I kept thinking the same thing: How does this story get told?

How It Works

Get closer to the music.

Middl8 is a fan-powered touring engine that gives fans a front row to the tour experience. For $6/month, fans get exclusive access to the artists and tours they love. You aren't subscribing to one artist. You are subscribing to live music.

Middl8 funds the artist's basic touring costs — gas, hotels, food — through a Middl8-branded Visa card.

Artists never owe anything back. Ever.

You get inside the tour: real-time updates from the van, the miles, the stops, the 11pm story from the green room, straight from the artists themselves.

Every membership unlocks the Road Feed for every artist on Middl8 — not just one. Follow as many tours as you want, and find new ones as they join.

You're not watching from the outside. You're on the crew.

$6/month keeps the road goingAn empty two-lane highway running toward distant mountains under a deep blue sky

Here's the part of live music you don't see: touring is brutal, and most of what makes a show happen never makes it past the parking lot.

A hotel room: $161 a night. Fuel for a 10-city tour: $725. Van breaks down. And then there's eating.

Even when a tour is a “success,” most independent artists come home from the road with less than when they left. Some stop touring. Some quit. You never even hear about it.

Middl8 makes the math better by providing a branded Visa card for critical expenses: hotel, gas, meals.

FAQ

Questions from the crew.

How does Middl8 actually work?

You subscribe on the website. Once confirmed, you will get a link for the app. The app is where you will follow along with the tours. You can follow as many artists as you like. Should you select the option, you can be alerted when an artist on the platform is playing near you. Your $6 per month gets you up close. And along with everyone else’s $6, allows Middl8 to provide artist expense assistance at scale. Hint: tell your friends.

What type of bands do you support?

Everyone! All genres welcome. This platform is designed for early to mid-level independent artists. They can be on an indie label, but cannot be getting tour support from the label or elsewhere.

Do I pick which artist my money goes to?

No. But you can pick which ones you follow on the app. Your subscription powers the Middl8 engine that keeps you engaged with the artists and funds expenses for the tour. And you may just find your next favorite band. Your $6 can go a long way.

Artists really don’t owe this money back?

Really. Regardless of tour success, they will not owe anything back to MIDDL8. Ever.

What stops an artist from misusing the money?

Every artist agrees to a transparency covenant before they’re funded. Our system tracks spending to ensure they are using the funds from Middl8 as intended.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. No card is charged until launch, and you can cancel whenever you want.
